So Pax East is coming up (Mar 22-24) . I’ll be talking on a panel on that Saturday with a bunch of other ex-38ers who have also gone indie. We’ll be talking about the indie life, life at 38, choice of beverages, and anything else the audience should ask us.
I’ll be paneling with the zany mastermind of Summer Camp Studios, the always friendly King Bee Digital, the super secretive RedFoe.com, and a few others who don’t seem to have a web home yet, but are likewise super talented.
The Panel is titled “After the EndGame: Indie Studios formed by 38 Studios Alumni”. I’ve heard that it may be streamed to Twitch.tv as well, for anyone curious that’s not in the Boston area….so that’ll be pretty neat!
I’ll *hopefully* be showing a gameplay video of Tower of Guns, depending on time available at the panel.
However, in other news, 3 of the 7 finalists have been picked, but you can STILL vote (every day, even!) for my Indie Speed Run entry, Hard Hat Ninja. If it gets closer to five stars there’s a chance the game will be put in front of Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation as a finalist and I’m KEENLY curious to know what he’d think of the terrible controls and Mike’s bizarre soundtrack.
I recently participated in a new game jam called Indie Speed Run. You basically get a random theme and element and have 48 hours to make a game. I’ve never made time for these sorts of things before, but always wanted to and I used the opportunity to test out my new-found-scripting-skills and meet some new friends in the indie-game community.
Here’s the game I made, a silly little thing called Hard Hat Ninja, using the randomly assigned theme of Construction and the random element of Ninjas.
I think it’s fun, although it’s not without some bugs (I’ve got a newer build with actual functioning controls, but sadly didnt get those in before the deadline. Anyway ,the contest build is available to play FOR FREE here! See if you can beat my highscore of 1200! Also, up until the end of January you can vote for games that you feel should go before the final judge, Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation. Half a dozen games are selected by merit from preliminary judges, but there’s some wildcard slots for a few popular-choice games. So if you don’t mind, give Hard Hat Ninja some ratings love so we can see what Yahtzee thinks of the music! You can vote everyday too (and yes that’s ok with the rules!) If you click around that site a bit, there’s a ton of other good games too!
I moonlight as a writer sometimes, and recently had one of my stories picked up by the prestigious horror magazine Shock Totem! It’s out now on hard copy or kindle, so go pick up a copy! I’m quite proud of my contribution, The Catch, and look forward to seeing what other chilling fiction the issue holds!
